I was riding in a taxi from the Guggenheim Museum back to my hotel and encountered a crowd marching near the horses and buggies. It was the time when animal activists were urging the release of all the horses from their servitude. The argument was that the animals were being mistreated etc. Actually, the horses were being treated quite well, with adequate food and reasonable schedules. Who would have taken care of them if they had been put out to pasture so they could romp around? Rumor had it that builders wanted to secure the property where the horses were kept, which was not an animal rights situation.

Since that time, not much has been said and the horses continue to provide a pleasant, although expensive, way to tour the park.

I like this photograph a lot. At first it seems to be an antique image; then one starts to look more closely and notices the modern clothing, the scaffolding on the building in the central distance, etc. and realizes it is present-day. Very nice!

A carriage ride through Central Park has an entirely different feel from an image of the carriage and horse in traffic. I must say seeing the carriages in the park itself makes me want to take a ride, but seeing the carriage on the street is disconcerting. The loud traffic and pedestrians suggested in your photo takes all the romance out for me. As for treating the horses well, several years ago I knew some of the carriage drivers and they love and care for their horses. I wonder if CoVID has taken it’s toll on this favorite tourist activity?
