The images in this series are from a new book being published in late November. They represent a variety of images that I’ve photographed over the years but avoided using or showing. While working on a previous book and slide presentation for a 2020 July show with Jan Kather, I ran across a series of images that prompted new processing. While mostly working in color with my botanical images, converting these to a form of black and white, or monochrome images created the portfolio for a new book: “Monotone, Duotone, Tritone”. Clearly they do not fit my usual botanical subject matter-rather, they represent my life long fascination with graphic design.

I think “Eyelight” is stunning! Can’t wait to see the whole book.
It seems circles keep appearing in these images (arc with the bicycle image). It’s interesting to share this info on the symbolism of the circle: It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God (‘God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere’ (Hermes Trismegistus)).
It’s great that you posted a group of images so this becomes a repeating
motif. I have always thought there was a bit of the divine in your botanicals, so maybe the relationship is closer than you think!
Jan,
Thanks and thanks to all who have commented. Jan, you always give me so much more to think about.
Really interesting to see a motif repeated with different subject matter especially the first three images which are all circular. Also ” bike light shadow” is very appealing and it’s linear qualities and that unexpected jarring offset of images. It’s intriguing to see the unexpected.
I’m especially taken by Bridge. The strings are stretched ever so tightly just up to the bridge and then explode into the future. The bridge of wood with circles, curves, and a heart are all part of the support that holds them and lets them go. I can’t wait to see the new book.
