I’ve always been drawn to our National Forest in the Hector Land Use Area of the Finger Lakes in Upstate NY. It’s a mixture of pasture and forest, filled with gorges, ponds and both intimate and distant views. The Interlocken Trail near Teeter Pond is a favorite inspiration for my work. This painting captured the long shadows of a June evening as the wind swept through trees on a ridge overlooking Seneca Lake. The place was clearly dramatic, yet a strong sense of peace came over me, making me feel glad to be alive. It’s that aliveness that I try to convey to my viewers.

This is a beautiful painting, and so recognizably a Porter piece, as it draws the viewer inexorably into that green distance. I would love to be in that time and place with a warm, grass-scented breeze caressing my shoulders. Very evocative!
Ah, the warmth and vibrance of a different season!
Wonderful composition, lighting, and movement. I especially like the way the diagonal of the leaning pine crosses the angle of the clouds. Overall, the style and even environment reminds me of a California Impressionist painting of the late 18th and early 19th century.
Such a dramatic angle of the wind swept pines! I can feel the wind coming off Seneca Lake. Powerful.
I love this painting because it reminds me of the back acre of property that my Brother owns with me and another family member in Ludlowville-NY.
I like the capture of wind on the pine tree and the scudding clouds and the evening shadows on the grass. Robert Frost says it best ” poems are made by fools like me but only GOD can make a tree”!
Thanks for the wonderful feed back. The Interlocken Trail in off Searsburg Road in Hector, part of the National Forest. There will be a companion piece in my show in October. It’s from the same trail but looking the other direction with different shadows. Hope you come back to SOAG for that one. I’ll post it to my web site as soon as it’s finished.
